Locals decry the low customer turnout

HOIMA, UGANDA – In the tranquil town of Kitoba subcounty, nestled within the Hoima district, lies the vibrant Bwendero market. For the past four months, this market was a symbol of hope and prosperity, buzzing with life and commerce. However, like all things in life, challenges emerged, and the market began to experience a concerning decline in both vendors and buyers.

Safiyani Asiimwe, the devoted Chairperson of Bwendero market, looked out over the market with a mixture of concern and determination. He had witnessed the bustling activity when the market first started, with eager customers and ambitious vendors flooding the stalls. Now, he saw the market struggling to maintain its once-thriving atmosphere. The root of the issue, as he observed, was that most vendors still stubbornly clung to their old locations along the main Hoima Kigorobya road.

“It’s disheartening to see our fellow vendors remain anchored on the roadside,” Safiyani lamented, voicing his concern to the local community. “By staying there, they miss out on the potential customers who come looking for goods at the heart of the market.”

The market had been thoughtfully planned to serve as a central hub for commercial activities in the area. But the vendors’ reluctance to relocate had created a division within the market, drawing customers away from its core and towards the center of the town instead. As a result, the overall sales and vibrancy of Bwendero market had dwindled.

Beatrice Kamurungi, a fishmonger known for her strong spirit and candid nature, expressed her thoughts on the matter. “It’s a mindset challenge,” she said, shaking her head with a mix of sadness and frustration. “Many people in the local community fail to see the potential benefits of selling and buying within the market’s premises. Some even look down upon these ‘low-key’ jobs without realizing their importance.”

Beatrice understood that the success of the market relied not only on the products being sold but also on the community’s collective effort to embrace and support it. She believed that if everyone acknowledged the market’s significance and patronized it, the entire community would reap the rewards.

To address the declining state of the market, Safiyani, Beatrice, and a group of dedicated vendors decided to take matters into their own hands. They launched a campaign to raise awareness about the market’s importance in stimulating the local economy and creating a vibrant social space.

Through word of mouth, community meetings, and even informative flyers handed out to passersby on the roadside, the group sought to enlighten the local residents about the significance of Bwendero market. They emphasized how shopping at the market not only supported local businesses but also strengthened the sense of community and unity among the residents.

Their efforts began to bear fruit. Slowly but steadily, more vendors started relocating to the heart of Bwendero market. The collective spirit was contagious, attracting buyers who appreciated the diverse range of goods available. As more people flocked to the market, the atmosphere regained its former vivacity, with the sounds of bartering and laughter echoing through the stalls.

Embracing technology, the market committee also set up social media pages and an online platform to promote the market and its offerings. This move expanded their reach beyond the local community, attracting visitors from neighboring towns and even tourists passing through the area.

The revival of Bwendero market was a testament to the power of collective action and community engagement. By breaking the shackles of old habits and embracing change, the vendors and local residents had breathed new life into their beloved market.

As the sun set over Bwendero market, Safiyani and Beatrice stood side by side, surveying the bustling scene with pride. The market that had once faced a downward spiral was now a thriving center of commerce and camaraderie. The unity of purpose and a shared vision had transformed Bwendero market into more than just a place of trade; it had become the heart of the community—a testament to the power of coming together for a greater cause.
