Hoima: EnviroServ Accused of Undermining Sub-county Leaders

Thursday, July 27, 2023

In a recent stakeholders’ meeting organized by Kaiso Women’s Group at Kaiso landing site of Lake Albert in Buseruka Sub-county, Hoima District, Kabaale Sub-county leaders expressed concerns about EnviroServ Uganda Ltd allegedly undermining their leadership role when interacting with local communities.

The Kabaale Sub-county Local Government Chairman, Mr. Hassan Kugonza, voiced his dismay over the lack of involvement in important matters related to job opportunities for local youths. He stated that information sharing from EnviroServ Uganda Ltd is limited, and they often discover that meetings have been held in certain villages without their knowledge or participation. This lack of communication hinders their supervisory and community mobilization efforts, which are essential for development and harmony in the region.

Mr. Kugonza emphasized the need for regular updates through appropriate channels to prevent misinformation and ensure that communities are well-informed about available opportunities. He urged EnviroServ Uganda Ltd to involve sub-county leaders and keep them informed, as they play a crucial role in supporting government initiatives and answering questions from the public about developments in their jurisdiction.

In response to queries from Kaiso leaders about job opportunities provided by the company, EnviroServ Uganda Ltd’s Public Relations Officer (PRO), Mr. Samuel Bahemuka, refuted the allegations, stating that they actively involve sub-county and village leaders in recruitment processes. He asserted that he personally engages with the community and has not received any such complaints.

EnviroServ Uganda Ltd operates the Nyamasoga Waste Management Facility, entrusted by the National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) to handle hazardous waste from the oil industry. The facility is located in Nyamasoga village, Kabaale Sub-county, Hoima District.

Mr. Samuel Mugusa, the Social Affairs Coordinator at the Petroleum Authority of Uganda (PAU), emphasized the importance of continuous coordination between the oil sector players, local communities, and their leaders to foster a positive relationship and avoid misconceptions that could negatively impact stakeholders in the oil sector.

The accusations raised by Kabaale Sub-county leaders highlight the significance of effective communication and collaboration between companies operating in the area and local authorities to promote sustainable development and community welfare.
