Kabale District, Uganda – In honor of National Youth Day and in conjunction with International Youth Day, a noteworthy tree-planting endeavor is set to take place in Kabale District, Uganda. A total of 1000 trees will be planted during the week-long celebrations as the world unites to address various youth-related concerns.

The United Nations declared International Youth Day on August 12, 2000, with the aim of directing global attention towards the multifaceted issues surrounding the younger generation. This year’s theme, “Green Skills for Youth: Towards a Sustainable World,” underscores the significance of empowering young people with environmental knowledge and abilities to ensure a more sustainable future.

Bernard Mwambara, the Administrator for the National Youth Council Secretariat, revealed that the Ministry of Water and Environment will supply the 1000 trees for the tree-planting initiative. This ambitious project aims to foster ecological consciousness among the youth and strengthen their commitment to environmental preservation.

As part of the commemoration of International Youth Day, Mondo Kyateeka, the Assistant Commissioner of Youth and Children in the Ministry of Gender, Labour, and Social Development, announced an array of activities scheduled from August 5th to August 11th. The week-long program will include dialogues centered around the theme, community engagements led by the youth, and topical discussions on crucial matters such as “Accelerating Recovery from Covid-19” and “Full Implementation of the 2030 Agenda: The Role of the Youths.”

The events will be focused on empowering young people and providing them with the necessary tools to contribute effectively to society’s growth while advocating for sustainable development. Kabale District, with its scenic landscapes and ecological significance, was chosen as the location for this year’s celebrations and tree-planting efforts.

Local authorities, youth organizations, and environmental activists have expressed enthusiasm for the upcoming events and are keen to participate actively in planting the 1000 trees, which will not only enhance the area’s biodiversity but also serve as a lasting symbol of the youths’ commitment to creating a greener and more sustainable world.

The initiative aligns with Uganda’s commitment to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, which call for urgent action to combat climate change, conserve biodiversity, and promote sustainable use of natural resources.
