Peter Swilkey’s Election as Sapiiny Cultural Leader Sparks Mixed Reactions

Friday, September 1, 2023

Kapchorwa District | The Black Examiner – Peter Swilkey has emerged as the newly elected Chairman of the Sapiny clan and assumed the role of the leader of the Sapiny Cultural Institution. This election comes after a series of unsuccessful attempts by the Sapiny community to determine their leadership.

The conflicts that had arisen were primarily between the Kapchai clan, the Kapchogen clan, and various sub-clans within the Sapiny community.

Peter Swilkey secured his position through a unanimous vote by the general assembly of Sapiny clan leaders. This decision followed the voluntary withdrawal of the other two candidates, Chebet Fred Wayawaya and Milton, who opted to support Peter Swilkey’s candidacy.

It’s worth noting that the regional head representative of the Kapchai clan did not participate in the election process.

The Kapchai clan had previously asserted their right to lead the Sapiny community, a claim echoed by the Kapchogen clan. However, Wayawaya expressed his belief in the importance of promoting unity and chose to step aside in favor of Peter Swilkey.

The outcome has sparked a variety of reactions, with some individuals welcoming the decision while others remain skeptical about its effectiveness.

Nevertheless, certain clan leaders have made it clear that they will not tolerate any future attempts to disrupt the stability and harmony within the community.
