Nansana Municipality: Shs1.4bn Lost in Tax Defaulters

Tuesday, September 12, 2023

Wakiso District | THE BLACK EXAMINER | Wakiso district’s Nansana Municipality has reported a revenue loss of approximately 1.4 billion shillings, primarily due to tax defaulters during the previous fiscal year.

Municipality Town Clerk Festo Tandeka shared this information with journalists at the Municipal headquarters in Nansana. He explained that they had set a revenue target of 9 billion shillings but were only able to collect 6.8 billion shillings during the FY 2022/2023.

Tandeka identified trading licenses and construction as the areas where most tax defaulters were found. Some developers constructed without making payments, while others paid less than required.

Nansana Municipality comprises four divisions, 29 wards, and 133 villages, with a population exceeding 624,000, including 1,054 government workers.

Furthermore, Nansana Municipality Mayor Regina Bakitte emphasized that women are the most affected victims of land grabbing in the municipality. She noted that out of every five victims, four are women, often widows and vulnerable landowners. These individuals are disproportionately affected by individuals who manipulate land records in the Ministry of Lands to forge titles, which they then use to displace locals who lack the means to defend their rights.
