Moroto District | THE BLACK EXAMINER | Moroto District leaders have embraced the construction of a cement and clinker factory. This 1.1 Trillion Shillings project is being undertaken by West International Holding Limited, a subsidiary of China West Cement Limited (stock code 2233.HK), a Hong Kong-listed company.
Anticipated to employ over 1,000 individuals in the Karamoja Sub-region, this factory is slated for completion in 2025. It will occupy 200 acres of land in Nadunget Sub County and produce roughly 6,000 tonnes per day of clinker and cement.
The primary goal of this development is to reduce the need to import raw materials for cement production from other parts of the country, benefiting the local economy.
During the groundbreaking ceremony officiated by President Yoweri Museveni, local leaders and elders expressed their support for the project, emphasizing its potential to protect the region’s minerals from exploitation and create job opportunities.
Rose Adero, the Moroto District woman councilor representing Loputuk Sub County, highlighted the industry’s potential to provide a market for raw materials and generate income for reformed warriors who previously lacked viable income-generating activities.
Mark Aol Musoka, a former LCV Chairperson for Moroto, noted that this investment would encourage other Ugandans to invest in the region, which was once considered a no-go zone.
Musoka stressed that it’s time for the region to contribute to the country’s economy, and the industry will provide employment opportunities for at least 35 percent of the local community, both skilled and unskilled.
Francis Adome, the Member of Parliament for Moroto Municipality, emphasized the strategic location of the factory, anticipating that it would attract markets from neighboring countries like Kenya and South Sudan.
