Monday, September 25, 2023

Lira, Uganda | THE BLACK EXAMINER | According to Daniel Roy Odur, the Executive Director of the Uganda Sickle Cell Rescue Foundation, Lango sub-region has the highest prevalence of sickle cell disease in Uganda. Their comprehensive survey has revealed that Lango surpasses all other regions in the country in terms of sickle cell disease burden.

Nationally, Odur Roy reported that approximately 25,000 children are born with sickle cell disease every year, and tragically, 80% of them do not survive past their fifth birthday.

In Lango, Alebtong district stands out with the highest number of sickle cell cases, accounting for 23%, which is notably higher than the national average of 17%.

Odur strongly urged cultural and religious leaders to play an active role in encouraging young people to undergo genetic compatibility tests before marriage. This proactive step can significantly reduce the number of children born with sickle cell disease.

The Uganda Sickle Cell Rescue Foundation has scheduled a mass sensitization campaign on sickle cell disease, along with the distribution of free sickle cell drugs, to take place on September 28, 2023, at the Mayor’s garden in Lira city.

Recently, during an institution council meeting, Eng. Dr. Michael Moses Odongo Okune, the paramount chief of Tekwaro Lango, called upon clan leaders to mobilize their communities to undergo genetic compatibility testing as a crucial measure in the fight against sickle cell disease.
