Kampala, Uganda | THE BLACK EXAMINER | The High Court in Kampala has scheduled November 20th, 2023, as the date for delivering its verdict in the case involving members of the Uganda Medical Association (UMA) who censured their President, Dr. Sam Oledo, on accusations of engaging in partisan politics.
Last year, Dr. Oledo had filed a petition with the High Court challenging his censure. In December, the presiding judge, Musa Ssekanna, issued an interim injunction preventing the removal of Dr. Samuel Oledo Odongo from his position as President of UMA.
In a recent hearing, Dr. Oledo’s lawyer, Elvis Ssemuyaba, revealed that they had filed an application for contempt of court. They claimed that despite the court’s interim injunction, certain UMA members, including Dr. Edith Nakku Joloba and others, had disregarded the court’s decision and denied Dr. Oledo his rightful presidential position. Ssemuyaba added that they were seeking legal consequences for these members who had also proceeded to organize UMA elections and forcibly exercise presidential rights and authority.
Justice Ssekaana has granted both parties one month to submit their arguments and counter-arguments. The court will reconvene on the 20th of the following month for the ruling on the main application and the discussion of the contempt of court application.
As of now, Dr. Oledo remains the officially recognized President of the Uganda Medical Association, as the judge halted the implementation of the December 6th resolution and the subsequent election of Dr. Edith Nakku Joloba as the acting president.
The UMA secretariat accused Dr. Oledo of engaging in partisan politics, alleging that he had mobilized medical students through the “Federation of Uganda Medical Interns” and promised them refreshments and a photo opportunity with President Museveni at Kololo Independence Grounds. During this event, the group knelt before the president and urged him to run in the 2026 presidential elections.
