Tanzanian President Suluhu Hassan in India

Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan has arrived in India to commence her four-day visit, with the primary objective of strengthening bilateral ties. This visit is notably the first by a Tanzanian President in over eight years.

In her remarks upon arrival, President Suluhu emphasized the significance of the relationship between Tanzania and India. She referred to India as an extended family, a strategic ally, and one of their most substantial trading partners. She expressed her anticipation for a fruitful visit aimed at enhancing trade and investment between the two nations, which she believes will lay the groundwork for prosperity for their respective populations.

The Ministry of External Affairs announced the visit, stating that it was at the invitation of President Smt. Droupadi Murmu. President Samia Suluhu Hassan’s visit is scheduled from October 8th to 10th, 2023, and she is accompanied by several ministers and a significant business delegation. This visit is expected to further rejuvenate and reinforce the historical and amicable relations between India and Tanzania.

During the initial day of her visit, President Suluhu had a meeting with India’s External Affairs Minister, Dr. S Jaishankar. Dr. Jaishankar expressed gratitude for her appreciation of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s initiative to grant permanent G20 membership to the African Union (AU). He also mentioned his appreciation for her guidance in expanding their bilateral relationship across various domains, which he shared on social media.

The Tanzanian President’s schedule includes a meeting with Prime Minister Modi on Monday for bilateral discussions, along with her participation in a business and investment forum in Delhi on October 10th. On Monday morning, she will receive a ceremonial welcome at the forecourt of the Rashtrapati Bhawan before her bilateral meeting with PM Modi.
