Dr. Musenero takes pride in cutting-edge technology to boost Uganda’s economy

Tuesday, October 10, 2023

Dr. Monica Musenero, the Minister of Science, Technology, and Innovation, has commended Uganda’s accomplishments in the fields of science and technology as the nation celebrates its independence.

Musenero highlighted that in addition to the successful launch of a satellite into orbit, a collaborative effort between Ugandan students and the government of Japan, Uganda has achieved several milestones through the Kiira Motors Corporation.

She specifically mentioned the ‘Bingwa’ tricycle motorcycle, the latest innovation designed to support modern farming, which aligns with the government’s focus on strengthening the economy and increasing income for Ugandans.

Dr. Musenero made these remarks during the Independence Day celebrations held at the Kitgum Farm Institute in Kitgum district.

Regarding the alleged mismanagement of Shs 7 billion in satellite funding, Musenero emphasized that these claims were baseless and concocted by those seeking to undermine Uganda’s progress in the field of space technology.

On December 2, 2022, Uganda successfully launched its first satellite into orbit from the International Space Station (ISS), known as the PearlAfricaSat-1 spacecraft, in collaboration with NASA. This satellite, along with Zimbabwe’s ZimSat-1, was intended for weather monitoring, disaster management, mineral wealth mapping, and other critical data generation.

However, it was reported that the satellite lacked some necessary components to fulfill its intended functions. The government is currently working on launching a second satellite to achieve Uganda’s objectives in space technology.
