Mansindi District | THE BLACK EXAMINER | In an effort to enhance the quality of education in Masindi district, Kinyara Sugar Works Limited has initiated annual quiz competitions for students in selected primary schools within the district.
During the preparatory quiz exercise held on Tuesday before the main competition scheduled for this Friday at the Social Club on the company’s premises, Anold Walukamba, the company’s Communication Officer, highlighted their commitment to fostering collaboration between students and teachers to promote education in the Bunyoro region. He mentioned that the questions answered during these competitions would help prepare students for their annual promotional and final exams.
Walukamba also disclosed that 11 schools supported by Kinyara Sugar Works Limited would participate in Friday’s quiz competitions, with cash prizes awarded to the top three students and teachers. Furthermore, they plan to expand the competitions to include more schools and engage additional stakeholders to boost the education sector in the region.
Roy Patrick Katusabe, the Human Resource Supervisor for Community Service at the company, emphasized that the competitions aimed to convey a message that addresses various human activities affecting sugar production at the factory. He expressed concern about students engaging in cane chewing during breaks, lunch, and evenings, which poses a threat to the company’s sugarcane farms and, consequently, impacts sugar production.
Katusabe further explained that these competitions would help students internalize the message against cane chewing and cane fires, issues that have posed ongoing challenges to the company’s operations.

Ronald Tumwesige, Deputy Director of Studies at Kinyara Sugar Works Primary School (one of the beneficiary schools), highlighted that the quiz competitions would have a positive impact on students’ academic development and also raise awareness about sugar cane safety. This awareness, he noted, would extend to the students’ communities, helping to spread the message effectively.
