Sylvia Nayebale, the incumbent Gomba District Woman Member of Parliament (MP), and Betty Ssentamu, sister to National Unity Platform (NUP) leader Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, better known as Bobi Wine, are feeling apprehensive due to the announcement of a Ugandan journalist based in the US who intends to contest against them in the 2026 elections.

Flavia Namulindwa, a former presenter at Bukedde television and radio, has publicly declared her candidacy for the Gomba District Woman MP seat on the NUP ticket for the upcoming 2026 elections. She has expressed confidence in her preparedness, including the necessary logistics.

Namulindwa initially refrained from contesting in the 2021 parliamentary elections due to financial constraints and didn’t anticipate receiving a NUP ticket, given that Bobi Wine’s own sister was a candidate in the same race. She believed Ssentamu would secure the victory, but circumstances took an unexpected turn, and Nayebale emerged as the winner.

She also faced legal setbacks in her attempts to challenge the election results in court. Sources in Gomba suggest that Ssentamu was disadvantaged due to her limited financial resources, a challenge that Namulindwa aims to address in her bid against Nayebale.

However, insiders within the NUP have cautioned Namulindwa, as defeating Ssentamu in the party’s primaries is anticipated to be a challenging endeavor.

Gomba holds significance as it is the home district of both Bobi Wine and President Yoweri Museveni, who is the National Resistance Movement (NRM) party’s chairman and has interests in the area, including a ranch. Both political heavyweights will likely exert considerable efforts to secure control of the district for their respective constituencies.
