The Benue State Police Command announced the elimination of two armed robbers believed to be responsible for a series of bank robberies in Otukpo Local Government Area (LGA) of the state. According to SP Sewuese Anene, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) of the command, a coordinated gang of armed robbers targeted five banks in Otukpo town on Friday.
The affected banks included Access Bank, First Bank, Zenith Bank, United Bank for Africa (UBA), and Stanbic IBTC Bank. The police engaged the suspects in a gun battle along Otukpo-Taraku road, resulting in the neutralization of two of the robbers. The remaining gang members abandoned their vehicles and fled into the forest.
During the robbery operation, four police personnel lost their lives, including the Otukpo Divisional Police Officer (DPO) and three other officers. Additional individuals who sustained injuries were receiving treatment at the hospital. An investigation is ongoing to identify all those involved in the criminal act.
The robbery spree lasted for approximately two hours, during which the suspects targeted the banks without interruption.
