Mukono District | THE BLACK EXAMINER | Uganda Christian University (UCU) is fully prepared to host the upcoming Inter-University Games taking place from December 16-21. Organized by the Association of Uganda University Sports (AUUS), this event will encompass 16 sporting disciplines and anticipates over 1,500 athletes.
At a press conference held at UCU’s Bishop Tucker Building in Mukono, UCU Vice Chancellor Aaron Mushengyezi expressed the institution’s unwavering readiness to manage this significant event. He conveyed his enthusiasm for UCU’s partnership with AUUS to orchestrate the 19th edition of the Inter-University Games in 2023.
Mushengyezi added, “We want to take this opportunity to welcome all sportsmen and women from universities to be part of this momentous occasion in December. UCU has a long history of organizing such competitions, and I am confident that we will do a very good job.”
He emphasized the commitment to sports at UCU, emphasizing that hosting such tournaments provides an opportunity to upgrade facilities and even construct new ones. Makerere University had originally been slated to host the games but had to decline due to their busy schedule in December.
Peninah Kabenge, the President of the Association of Uganda University Sports (AUUS), expressed her gratitude to UCU for accepting the request to organize the event on short notice. She stated, “Originally, the games were supposed to be played at Makerere University, but their calendar didn’t allow it due to students’ examinations. So we had to find a suitable alternative, and here we are at UCU.”
Kabenge highlighted the longstanding relationship between AUUS and UCU, which dates back to 2007 when the university hosted its first national games. She praised UCU’s sports facilities and their role in fostering a spirit of sportsmanship within the institution. This marks the third time UCU has hosted a university tournament, following their hosting of the East Africa University games in 2007 and 2013. In the previous edition, UCU secured the third position, with Ndejje University and Makerere University finishing first and second, respectively.
