Mpigi District | THE BLACK EXAMINER | Over the weekend, the residents of Kayabwe Town Council in Mpigi District, Central Uganda, were plunged into shock and sorrow following the mysterious death of a local businessman. The tragic incident unfolded as the businessman, identified as Richard Muwonge, reportedly drowned in River Katonga after losing over Shs6 million in a sports betting venture.
Muwonge had gone missing from his family on Friday evening when he failed to recover the significant sum he had wagered at one of the sports betting facilities in Kayabwe Town Council.
According to Mr. Abdul Muwami, the Kayabwe Village Chairperson, Muwonge had a dispute with his family members on Friday evening, leading to a bitter quarrel before his disappearance. Tragically, his lifeless body was discovered in River Katonga, having been retrieved by local fishermen on Sunday morning.
Confirming the chairperson’s account, one of Muwonge’s family members, Mr. Joseph Kamoga, acknowledged that a heated argument erupted at home due to Muwonge’s financial losses at the betting facility. He explained that Muwonge left on a motorcycle (boda boda), but they were unaware of the direction he had taken. The shocking news of his drowning reached them around 7:00 pm on Friday.
Mr. Abdulrahman Kamani, a close friend of the deceased, revealed that Muwonge had sought Shs1.5 million from their joint online business account to mitigate his losses. They conducted the transaction at a mobile money agent, and to Kamani’s dismay, Muwonge met his tragic end the same day.
