On Friday, the bus driver who was caught on camera texting while driving appeared in court and faced charges of driving while using a hand mobile phone. Andrew Jjemba pleaded not guilty in front of Grade One Magistrate Martins Kirya at the LDC court. Following his plea, he applied for bail.

Magistrate Kirya granted bail, setting a cash bail of Shs500,000 and requiring each of his sureties to be bonded with Shs1 million. The case was adjourned to November 22.

Prosecutor Timothy Eduti informed the court that Jjemba committed the offense on October 31 around 10:00 am at Namungoona in Rubaga Division along Hoima Road while operating a bus owned by Link Bus Services. Investigations into the matter are still ongoing.

In a statement released on Wednesday, the bus company admitted that a passenger had filmed Mr. Jjemba, 43, on one of their buses traveling the Kampala-Fort Portal-Kasese route while using his phone while driving. Following initial investigations, the company suspended Andrew from his duties immediately, expressing strong condemnation for his actions and emphasizing that he had recently completed their annual refresher training.
