Kampala, Uganda | THE BLACK EXAMINER | One individual has been confirmed dead as a result of a stray bullet during a protest at Kireka Barracks. The incident occurred yesterday during a demonstration by residents of the area, involving road blockades and the burning of car tires, deemed as unlawful activities by the police.
Luke Owoyesigyire, Deputy Kampala Metropolitan Police Spokesperson, reported that the demonstrators threw stones at officers dispatched to disperse the group. Unfortunately, Owoyesigyire stated, “a stray bullet claimed the life of an unidentified adult male during the dispersal.”
To restore order in the face of escalating tensions, tear gas was employed. The deceased’s body was transported to City Mortuary Mulago, and active investigations by Kampala Metropolitan East and Jinja Road Police are underway to determine the circumstances surrounding the initiation of the unlawful demonstration and identify the officer responsible for the stray bullet incident.
Owoyesigyire appealed for calm within the local community during the ongoing investigations.
