Police in Sheema district are currently investigating the circumstances surrounding the collapse of a pit-latrine on a Senior Six Candidate at Kitagata Secondary School. The incident occurred just hours before the student was scheduled to take his Uganda Advanced Certificate of Education (UACE) exams.
The deceased, identified as Caption Rwamamanzi, was a 23-year-old Senior Six student at Kitagata SSS. His subject combination included Physics, Economics, Mathematics, and Information Computer Technology (ICT). Kitagata SSS is located in Kitagata Town Council, Sheema District.
Rwamamanzi went missing on Sunday, November 12, during the preparation period for the National examinations scheduled for Monday. Concerns were raised the following morning, November 13, when the school management reported his disappearance, prompting a search.
Mr. Asaph Mwije, the school deputy head teacher, explained that efforts were made to check all school buildings to locate the missing student, but he was not found. Subsequently, a report was filed at Kitagata Police Station.
According to Marcial Tumusiime, the Greater Bushenyi police spokesperson, the incident is attributed to heavy rains that damaged the foundation of the latrine. The latrine was constructed on a slanting terrain, and the adverse weather conditions led to its collapse, resulting in this tragic event.
