The 26-year-old suspect had been evading arrest since November 19 when he allegedly killed 10-year-old Rashad Ssekamatte and concealed the body in his security room before fleeing the school premises.
The victim, Rashad Ssekamatte, was the son of Umar Ssekamatte, the proprietor of Buwungu UMEA Primary School. The suspect was tracked down by police detectives on December 7, 2023, in Soroti District and subsequently handed over to the Chieftaincy of Military Intelligence (CMI).
Majid Karim, the spokesperson for Katonga Regional Police, reported that preparations were underway to transfer the suspect back to Mpigi, where the crime had taken place. On Tuesday afternoon, with the collaboration of police and CMI, the suspect was successfully brought to Mpigi Central Police Station, where he is presently held.
Karim stated in an interview, “Police, with the assistance of other security agencies and the minor’s parents, managed to locate the suspect. He has been safely returned to Mpigi District, where he will face court proceedings once investigations are concluded.”
Recounting the tragic events of November 19, Umar Ssekamatte expressed shock, revealing that upon discovering his son’s lifeless body in a pool of blood, he realized that the right arm had been severed. Authorities noted additional injuries, including a deep cut on the head.
Initial police findings suggested that the security guard harbored a dispute with the school director, stemming from a warning against substance abuse. Locals, expressing satisfaction with the suspect’s detention, conveyed optimism for justice for the grieving parents and urged authorities to expedite the investigation process for a swift court appearance. Buwungu Village chairperson Twaha Kalungi extended appreciation to the police for the arrest, urging a prompt resolution to bring the suspect to trial.
