Summary:

  • A mother of six in Aweki village, Kole district, tragically took her own life after struggling to repay a loan from a local savings group, leaving behind six orphans.

The Aweki village in Abur parish, Ayer sub-county, Kole district is currently in the grip of sorrow and disbelief as a mother of six tragically took her own life yesterday evening at approximately 9:00 PM. The devastating incident unfolded after she struggled to repay a loan of 1,672,000/= that she had borrowed from the Rwot-akica village saving and loan association (Bolcup).

As per Apobo Vicky’s account, members of the VSLA Rwot-akica group had been pressuring her to settle the debt since she took the loan in February of this year. Regrettably, she found herself unable to meet the repayment deadline.

According to the report, her husband and family were contemplating selling their land to assist her in repaying the debt. However, she vehemently opposed this idea, insisting that the land be preserved for the welfare of her children, and she was determined to find an alternative solution to clear the loan. Tragically, she was discovered lifeless this morning at around 5:40 AM, hanging from a mango tree with a rope just a few meters from her residence. Her disappearance had been noted the previous evening at 9:00 PM.

George Oleke, the clan chief of Along clan, the deceased’s ancestral lineage, verified the report, expressing deep sorrow over the unfortunate decision to end her life due to a loan debt, leaving behind six bereaved orphans. He urged the public to explore alternative avenues when confronted with challenges.

Ayer police station dispatched officers to the scene, and the body of the deceased was handed over to her relatives for funeral arrangements.
