Summary:

  • A woman in Mukulusu village, Kakamega County, shocked residents by jumping into the Isiukhu River with her two-month-old twins; she was rescued, but the infants tragically drowned, leaving the community in disbelief.

Residents of Mukulusu village in Shinyalu, Kakamega County, were left in shock on Tuesday when a woman plunged herself into the Isiukhu River with her two-month-old twins.

Lustina Masitsa reportedly leaped into the river while tightly holding her two infants, a boy and a girl. Although she was successfully rescued from the water, tragically, both children drowned.

Johnstone Shiraho, one of the first responders, recounted finding Lustina clinging to a rock. “Upon seeing her, one of us dived into the water and pulled her out,” Mr. Shiraho said. Regrettably, the babies were swept away by the strong currents.

“We are praying and hoping that the divers find the missing bodies,” expressed Rose Ichechi, a relative.

Lustina’s husband, Kevin Modero, shared that his wife had gone to her parents’ home in Shitaho village for a funeral and was expected to return home in a week. Overwhelmed with grief, Mr. Modero, lacking financial means, struggled to cope.

It remains uncertain whether Lustina intended to end her life and the lives of her children. “She was in a good mood when she left her parents’ home. We still can’t figure out what transpired thereafter,” explained Lucy Atitai, a sister-in-law.

Only one body has been recovered so far, taken to Kakamega County Referral Hospital mortuary for a post-mortem examination, while search efforts for the second body continue. Investigators are awaiting Lustina’s stabilization to gain insights into the tragic incident.
