Summary:

  • The trial for the murder of businessman Henry Katanga has been postponed to hear bail applications for three of the suspects, including the deceased’s daughter.

The trial involving five individuals implicated in the murder of Kampala businessman Henry Katanga has been postponed to January 8, 2024. This delay is to facilitate the hearing of a bail application for three of the suspects currently in remand.

At the Nakawa Magistrates Court, presided over by Mr. Elias Kakooza, Patricia Kakwenza (the late Katanga’s daughter), Dr. Charles Otai, and George Amanyire (a domestic worker at the deceased’s home) were further remanded. The three suspects, who spent Christmas in prison, appeared in court on a production warrant to apply for bail through their lawyers. However, due to the absence of state prosecutors, the court adjourned the case.

The suspects face charges of destroying evidence and acting as accessories to murder. Molly Katanga, the deceased’s wife, and their daughter, Martha Nkwanzi Katanga, have also been summoned by the court in connection to the businessman’s death.

Allegedly, Molly Katanga killed her husband on November 2, 2023, and Martha Nkwanzi and Patricia Kakwanza are accused of tampering with evidence at the crime scene to prevent its use in the legal proceedings. Dr. Otai and Amanyire are alleged to have assisted individuals to escape punishment for their involvement in the offense.
