The victims were rushed to the hospital, with three of them urgently taken to Hoima Regional Referral Hospital in critical condition. Amos Kusetula, an intern doctor in charge of the surgery department at Hoima Referral Hospital, identified the deceased as Timothy Kyomuhendo, an 18-year-old resident of Busisi, Hoima West Division, Hoima City.
The eyewitness told Examiner that the accident happened around 8:15 p.m. at Kakindo village in Bulindi Town Council, Hoima district.
“The accident occurred as the supporters were returning from Masindi after celebrating their team’s 3-1 victory against Soltilo Bright Stars FC,” he added.
Kitara FC Vice President in charge of communications, Mr. Francis Mugerwa, expressed regret about the incident, stating that they received unfortunate news about the deaths of some fans who were returning to Hoima after the match against Bright Stars FC.
“We extend our sympathies to the bereaved families and friends of the deceased and those injured. Our president will provide a more detailed statement,” he said.
Wyclif Mugume Munyizi, the chairperson for Kitara FC fans, confirmed the accident, attributing it to the overspeeding of fans after winning the game against Bright Stars in Masindi. Mugume mentioned that their appeals to fans against overspeeding and drinking under the influence of alcohol are often disregarded.
Allan Hakiza, the police regional spokesperson for the Albertine region, confirmed the accident but couldn’t provide details since he was awaiting the police officers who had visited the scene.
However, Kitara’s victory propelled them to the second position on the 16-team UPL table, accumulating 29 points from 15 games.
As of press time, the body was still at the Hoima Regional Referral Hospital mortuary.”
