Summary:

  • The UPDF has assumed control of Aloysius Bugingo’s security after the pastor survived an assassination attempt in Kampala. Col Fred Mwesigye, the commander of UPDF operations in Kampala Metropolitan Area, assured increased security at the church and related locations.

The security of Aloysius Bugingo is now under the control of the UPDF following the Pastor’s survival of an assassination attempt in Kampala last week.

Addressing believers at House of Prayer Ministries International, Col Fred Mwesigye, the commander of UPDF operations in Kampala Metropolitan Area, assured that security had been reinforced at the church in Kikoni, Makerere, Kampala.

During the Sunday prayer, Mwesigye stated, “We will do our utmost to ensure security for the church,” emphasizing that UPDF is responsible for the church, the Pastor’s residence (Namayumba – Wakiso), and Salt TV offices in Rubaga.

Mwesigye reassured the congregation, saying, “Our duty is to prevent such incidents from happening again. We are actively working towards that goal. Stay calm. While we face challenges, we are committed to protecting you.”

These statements from Mwesigye were prompted by Bugingo’s request for UPDF officers to affirm to believers that security measures had been heightened at the church.

Acknowledging the fear among followers to gather at the church, Bugingo said, “Our followers may fear to gather here at church since I am being hunted by criminals.”

During Sunday’s church service, Pastor Bugingo mourned the death of his bodyguard, Richard Muhumuza, who was shot dead on January 2, 2024, in Namungoona, a Kampala suburb, when unknown gunmen reportedly attacked the vehicle carrying Bugingo and Muhumuza.

Bugingo, who had been living in fear due to consistent death threats, revealed that Muhumuza sacrificed his life for the Pastor to survive. Despite the challenges, Bugingo affirmed his commitment to continue preaching the word of God without fear.

As of now, the police are yet to release a report on the attempted assassination against Bugingo.
