Ashraf Nyorano Mugenyi, the former Chief of Protocol (Kabonerwa) of Bunyoro Kitara Kingdom, has passed away at the age of 79.
His son, Mr Muzamil Aheebwa, informed Examiner that his father passed away at his home in Butanjwa cell, East Division in Hoima city.
Mr Aheebwa mentioned that his father had been battling diabetes and high blood pressure for quite some time.
Nyorano had spent a week admitted to Hoima Regional Referral Hospital before being discharged on Monday. Unfortunately, he passed away shortly after.
The deceased, a few days away from celebrating his 80th birthday on April 4, will be buried tomorrow (Saturday), March 9, 2024, following Islamic rites.
Nyorano hailed from the prominent Yubu family in Hoima and was the brother of Mr Yunus Mugabe, the ex-Commissioner for Local Government.
At the time of reporting, Bunyoro Kitara Kingdom (BKK) had not issued an official condolence message. However, Haji Burhan Kyakuhaire, the BKK Cultural Affairs Advisor, expressed the kingdom’s deep sorrow at Nyorano’s passing.
Nyorano served as Kabonerwa in BKK, leading the Omukama (King) of Bunyoro Kitara Kingdom wherever he went.
Haji Kyakuhaire praised Nyorano’s dedication to promoting Bunyoro culture and Runyoro language. He also noted Nyorano’s significant contributions to Islamic religious affairs and his involvement with the Uganda People’s Congress (UPC) party.
Nyorano was known for his advocacy for environmental conservation and his efforts to preserve Bunyoro culture through radio programs.
In an nterview with Examiner, Nyorano voiced concerns about environmental degradation and climate change, emphasizing the need for conservation efforts.
