Dr. Abed Bwanika, Member of Parliament for Kimaanya-Kabonera Division, has launched a verbal attack on Mr. Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, known as Bobi Wine, the President of the National Unity Platform (NUP), regarding the deadlock involving former Leader of the Opposition in Parliament and Prime Minister of Buganda Kingdom, Charles Peter Mayiga.
Speaking at the burial of Pascal Ssekasamba, brother of the late Mathias Nsubuga Birekeraawo, a former MP of Bukoto South and Secretary General of the Democratic Party (DP), Dr. Bwanika accused Mr. Kyagulanyi of orchestrating politically motivated assaults against the two aforementioned leaders.
Addressing Mr. Kyagulanyi directly amidst interruptions from some attendees, Dr. Bwanika urged him to refrain from targeting the Katikkiro (Prime Minister) of Buganda Kingdom. He emphasized mutual respect in politics and appealed for an end to the persecution of leaders, highlighting that Mpuuga, the figure under attack, holds a position of leadership similar to Mr. Kyagulanyi’s.
The burial ceremony, held in Manja village, Kisekka Sub County, Lwengo District, turned into a political arena with supporters of NUP labeling Dr. Bwanika as deceitful when he suggested he had the power to dismiss them.
Dr. Bwanika attributed the inability to control these assaults to Mr. Kyagulanyi’s failure to rein in his associates.
In a dramatic turn, interruptions persisted, and Dr. Bwanika was deprived of the microphone.
Upon addressing the attendees, Mr. Kyagulanyi initiated his speech with an apology for Dr. Abed Bwanika’s remarks.
Nevertheless, Mr. Kyagulanyi acknowledged Dr. Bwanika’s role in his political journey but reminded him of his own contributions to Dr. Bwanika’s parliamentary position.
He assured Mpuuga of no animosity, urging unity against their common adversary, President Museveni.
Mr. Kyagulanyi implored mourners to pray for him, citing internal and external challenges within his party and against the regime.
Fr. Henry Kasule, the parish priest of Kyanukuzi, presided over the burial mass, urging politicians to reject financial inducements from dictatorial regimes.
Mathias Mpuuga, Nyendo-Mukungwe MP and Parliamentary Commissioner, was unable to address the gathering.
The funeral was attended by various dignitaries.
Evelyn Nakku Ssekasamba, the widow, expressed gratitude for her late husband’s life and encouraged her children to maintain faith.
Ssekasamba was laid to rest at his ancestral home.
