JINJA, (Examiner) – In a significant boost to Uganda’s military medical capabilities, the United States government has donated a Level II hospital storage facility to the Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF). The handover ceremony took place at the Uganda Rapid Deployment Capability Centre (URDCC) in Jinja Cantonment, Gaddafi Barracks.
Brigadier General Peter Gaetano Omola, Commandant of URDCC, expressed deep gratitude for the enduring bilateral relations between Uganda and the United States. He highlighted the crucial support provided by the U.S. in enhancing the capacity and capabilities of the UPDF.
“On behalf of the Chief of Defence Forces (UPDF), I extend heartfelt thanks to the U.S. government for their unwavering support to the UPDF and URDCC, particularly in capacity and capability building. Our current achievements are largely due to this support, which we deeply appreciate,” stated Brig Gen Omola. He emphasized that the new facility is fully operational and will significantly enhance the medical capabilities of the UPDF.
Lieutenant Colonel Christian Noumba, the U.S. Defence Adviser to Uganda, reaffirmed the U.S. commitment to building medical capabilities, especially in peacekeeping operations. He noted that this investment would be pivotal for the UPDF’s mission in the African Union Transition Mission in Somalia.
The ceremony was attended by key military officials including Brig Gen Flavia Byekwaso, Chief of Staff – URDCC; Col Joseph Okalebo, Deputy Chief of Staff – URDCC; Col Alex Afayoa, Administrative Officer – URDCC; and Master Sergeant Njoroge Francis from the U.S. Army, among others.
