Summary:

  • The UN refugee agency (UNHCR) is extending its Sudan aid plan to Libya and Uganda due to a surge in refugees. Over 20,000 refugees have arrived in Libya, and 39,000 in Uganda in recent months, highlighting the dire circumstances and difficult choices faced by those fleeing Sudan.

The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) announced on Tuesday the expansion of its Sudan aid plan to include Libya and Uganda, in response to a significant influx of refugees.

Ewan Watson, a UNHCR spokesperson, reported that over 20,000 refugees have arrived in Libya since last year, with numbers rapidly increasing in recent months. Meanwhile, Uganda has received at least 39,000 Sudanese refugees.

“This situation highlights the extreme desperation and the tough choices people are making, finding themselves in places like Libya, which currently poses severe challenges for refugees,” Watson stated.
