High Court Judge David Majanja has died suddenly, Chief Justice Martha Koome confirmed on Wednesday, July 10. The Judiciary fraternity is deeply mourning his loss.
“We are all heartbroken,” Justice Koome expressed.
Justice Majanja was a prominent figure in the development of post-2010 jurisprudence and a vital pillar in the institution-building of the Judicial Service Commission (JSC) and the Judiciary. Recently re-elected to the JSC representing the Kenya Magistrates and Judges Association, he was stationed at the High Court civil division at Milimani.
Justice Majanja was appointed as a Judge of the High Court in 2011, having previously served in Kisumu and other court stations. His academic achievements include a Master of Laws (LLM) degree from the University of Pretoria and a Bachelor of Laws from the University of Nairobi.
Senior counsel Kiragu Kimani described his passing as a tragic loss, noting his unparalleled work ethic and significant contributions to the judiciary. Law Society of Kenya (LSK) president Faith Odhiambo highlighted his studious contributions to jurisprudence and his commitment to judicial excellence.
Justice Majanja played a key role in notable cases, including the ruling that deemed the Housing Levy in the Finance Act of 2023 discriminatory and unconstitutional. He leaves behind a legacy of dedication and excellence in the legal field.
