Rukungiri: A 26-year-old man die in police custody

A 26-year-old male named Benjamin Akampa alias Kyojo, a resident of Kitojo Central in Buyanja Sub County, died suddenly while in police custody at the Buyanja police station. The cause of his death is currently under investigation by police in Rukungiri District.

e suspect was caught in connection with the theft of a Hisense television set worth Shs. 1,600,000.

In addition to Niwamanya Ivan, Tumuhairwe Merry, Tumuhabirwe Yusufu, and others, the complainant (Allan Atweta) also began looking for the suspect. When they called him, he indicated he was in a bar at the Marumba Trading Center. They then picked him up and took him to a specific house, where it has been shown that they beat him up, said Mr. Elly Maate, the Kigezi regional police spokeswoman.

Mr. Maate continues, “They took Akamba to Buyanja Police Station and he was duly detained after Akamba failed to reveal where the TV was.”

He adds that when SPC Begumisa Bazira unlocked the cells on Thursday night at around 7:20 p.m., he discovered Akampa lying down, face up, and upon checking him, he was dead.

The deceased began complaining of stomach ache and began convulsing as if he were intoxicated, according to comments received from other suspects who are currently in detention, Mr. Maate continued.

The body has been taken to Rwakabengo HC III mortuary for postmortem.

Meanwhile, the four suspects who allegedly beat the deceased have been arrested to aid investigations.
