Oyam North Begins Voting to Choose its Next M.P from Four Competing Candidates

In the constituency of Oyam North, located in Oyam District, voters have commenced their participation in the closely contested election to select the next Member of Parliament. Following a rigorous selection process, the Electoral Commission (EC) authorized four candidates to compete for the parliamentary seat out of an initial pool of nine.

Opening of Polls at different polling Stations in the Constituency started on time and voting progressing well and peaceful.

The Electoral Commission Uganda has established a Query/Complaints Desk at the Oyam District Council Hall for purposes of receiving and handling any complaints that may arise from 7 am up to 4 pm.

Political parties/independent candidates have bbeen advised to appoint an official agent to sit with the (Commission) officials at this desk, to ease the handling of any query and/or complaint that may arise.

This election serves as a replacement for the late Col (Rtd) Charles Engola, who held the position of labour state minister until his unfortunate demise on May 2 when he was fatally shot by his bodyguard, Pte Wilson Sabiiti.

The four candidates vying for the parliamentary seat consist of three men and one woman. They are Daniel Okello representing the National Unity Platform, Samuel Engola from the National Resistance Movement (NRM), Dr. Eunice Apio Otuko representing the Uganda People’s Congress, and Newton Freddy Okello from the Forum for Democratic Change (FDC).

According to Benson Dila, the chairman of Oyam LC5, the Oyam North constituency comprises a total of 90,733 registered voters, 167 polling stations, 8 Sub-counties including two Town councils, 41 parishes and two Town halls.

At 5:00am today, July 6, 2023, the Electoral Commission of Uganda initiated the distribution of polling materials from Oyam Central Police Station to all 167 polling stations within Oyam North Constituency, situated in Oyam District.
