After a couple was discovered engaging in sexual activity near the pulpit on the altar, Christians have made a solemn vow never to pray at Bugonya Church of Uganda again. Leaders of the church, situated in Kayonza Sub County in Kayunga District, have responded by initiating a period of fasting and prayer in the wake of what they deem to be a “shocking sinful act.”

Local residents disclosed to our reporter on Wednesday that they would refrain from attending the church until its leaders arrange a special event to purify it from the “satanic act” that transpired within God’s house on Tuesday, approximately at 8 pm. Although the individuals involved are not members of the church, Bugonya LC1 chairman, George William Kanda, explained that a 23-year-old married Catholic man from the village entered the church with a Muslim woman through a window.

“They gained access to the church through the windows since the doors were locked,” Kanda clarified.

The man, who is married with two children, and the woman, who is currently residing with her mother in Bugonya Village after divorcing her previous husband in Kitimbwa Town Council, were caught red-handed by the man’s official wife. The wife’s outcry attracted residents to the scene, leading to the couple’s apprehension. The woman’s headgear and the man’s T-shirt were retained as evidence at the LC1 chairman’s residence, with Kanda noting that he is well acquainted with the T-shirt’s owner. Kanda further revealed that the partially unclothed couple was brought to his office, and he subsequently filed a case of promiscuity against them.

However, he later released the pair, stating that “the LC court will soon convene to address the case.”

Kanda mentioned that by Thursday morning, the man had absconded from his home, and his whereabouts remained unknown. “A case does not expire. He will be held accountable for his wrongdoing whenever he returns,” he asserted.

Beatrice Ajwang, the Kayunga District Officer in-charge of the Criminal Investigations Department, acknowledged hearing about the incident but clarified that it had not been reported to the police.

Aaron Komugisha, the lay leader of Bugonya Church of Uganda, informed us that they are organizing a ceremony in which clergy members from the district will gather to pray for the church before resuming its operations. “Numerous clergy members have already visited the church, and they are profoundly dismayed,” he expressed.

“The couple should repent and seek forgiveness from God,” remarked one church member who witnessed the incident.

Bugonya village is situated approximately 35 kilometers away from Kayunga Town.
