Catholic Bishops in Malawi protest homosexuality

Saturday, July 15, 2023

The Episcopal Conference of Malawi took the lead in organizing an inter-religious march to express their religious stance on same-sex marriages in the country.

Initially, the Conference declared their intention to hold nationwide street protests against ongoing efforts to legalize same-sex marriages through a court case. Other religious organizations also joined the cause.

During a press briefing held yesterday, Very Rev. Fr. Alfred Chaima, Secretary General of the Episcopal Conference of Malawi, represented the ECM, while Most Reverend George Tambala represented the Archdiocese of Lilongwe. They were accompanied by representatives from other religious bodies.

Fr. Chaima emphasized that the Catholic Bishops in Malawi are deeply concerned about the issue of same-sex marriages. They believe that it not only clashes with the culture and traditions of the Malawian people but also undermines the sanctity of life and the Sacrament of Matrimony.

Archbishop Tambala stated that they submitted a petition to parliament on behalf of the religious organizations involved in the march.
