A shift in mindset is necessary regarding the rationale behind voting for political leaders in Uganda. It is crucial to foster collective efforts aimed at promoting a positive perspective on this matter.

During a stakeholders’ dialogue held at Verina Gardens in Kasese Municipality this morning, Mr. Zepher Mubigwa, the Kasese Deputy Resident District Commissioner in charge of Busongora, emphasized the importance of the public understanding why it is crucial to elect focused political leaders into office. He called for intensified efforts in civic education, particularly focusing on effectively reaching and empowering illiterate and less exposed voters in rural areas.

Rev. Fr. Expedito Masereka, the General Secretary for the Inter-Religious Council of Uganda in Kasese, who also serves as the Pastoral Coordinator for the Diocese of Kasese, attributed the challenges in electing political leaders in the district to poverty and low levels of education. These factors often result in uninformed decision-making during national elections.

Ms. Immaculate Nalubyai, the Advocacy and Communications Manager at Saferworld, the organization funding the dialogue, explained that the purpose of the gathering was to provide guidance to the district in addressing election-related challenges that can be avoided ahead of the 2026 general elections.

Mr. Honest Tumwesigye, an election supervisor working with the returning officer in Kasese district, emphasized their commitment to conducting free, fair, and peaceful elections as their primary goal.
