The EC has announced a combined by-election to fill various positions in Hoima District. These positions include Sub County Councillors for Katereiga Parish, Buhanika Sub County, and the Sub County Male Councillor representing Older Persons for Kabaale Sub County.
The by-election process is scheduled to begin on July 24, 2023, with the updating of the National Voters’ Register for the district. This update will take place at designated stations in each of the 55 parishes and wards in Hoima District, concluding on July 28, 2023.
Following the register update, the display of the Voters’ Register will occur from August 9 to August 18, 2023, at all 173 polling stations in the district. Additionally, the Display of Parish Tribunal Recommendations for inclusion or deletion from the Voters’ Register will take place from August 18 to August 23, 2023, at the respective Parish/Ward Headquarters.
The nomination of candidates is set for August 30 and 31 at the Hoima District Returning Office. Subsequently, the nominated candidates will conduct campaign meetings from September 1 to September 12, 2023.
The polling and tallying of results for the by-election of the district chairperson and the Sub County directly-elected Councillors for Katereiga and Buhanika parishes will occur on September 14, 2023, at all polling stations in the affected electoral areas.
However, the polling for the Sub County Male Councillor representing Older Persons for Kabaale Sub County will take place on September 8, 2023, conducted by the electoral college.
The Hoima District Chairperson seat became vacant due to the unfortunate death of Kadiri Kirungi, who lost his life in a road accident in Mitaagi Village, Bukomero Town Council, along the Kampala-Hoima Highway in Kiboga District on March 17, 2023.
Other Local Government vacancies to be filled in the by-election occurred due to the resignation of the elected Sub County Directly-elected Councillor for Katereiga Parish and Buhanika, as well as the passing of the Sub County Male Councillor representing Older Persons for Kabaale Sub County.
It should be noted that the former Chairman LC 5 lost his life in a car accident along the Kampala-Hoima highway in Kiboga District on May 17, 2023. Regrettably, the incident resulted in the loss of two lives.
