Monday, July 17, 2023

A soldier of the Uganda People’s Defence Force (UPDF) has been arrested by the police and other security agencies following the alleged killing of a civilian in Bukwo District.

The suspect, identified as Corporal Lawrence Sibiwa from the 51 Infantry Battalion, is currently in UPDF custody after fatally shooting Fred Kwemoi, a 34-year-old resident of Taboswet village in the eastern district.

Maj Isaac Oware, spokesperson for the third division, confirmed the tragic incident, stating that it took place on Sunday evening along the Kapchorwa-Bukwo-Suam Road.

Maj Okware explained that the victim, Kwemoi, was intercepted and shot after a confrontation with soldiers who were assigned to guard road equipment for the China State Construction Company.

“The incident occurred at approximately 9:00 PM along the Kapchorwa-Bukwo road. It is alleged that Kwemoi Fred was intercepted and shot due to suspicions arising from a scuffle that ensued between him and the soldiers who were tasked with protecting the road equipment,” Okware noted.
