Obongi District is reeling from a violent attack by gunmen dressed in army uniforms, who opened fire in the Kejuru area of a refugee settlement, leaving one dead and several others injured. The incident occurred on Sunday at around 19:50 hours, with the attackers killing Alfred Wani and injuring others.

Police Public Relations Officer for North West Nile, Mr. Ignatius Dragudu, confirmed the tragic event, stating that Wani’s lifeless body was found at a local pub, where he had been shot. The injured were swiftly transported to Belamening Health Center II for treatment.

Mr. Anthony Kyamundu, Chairperson of the Refugee Welfare Committee in Palorinya settlement, described the chaos: “We were caught off guard. Gunshots erupted in the pub, causing people to flee in panic.” Kyamundu added that the attackers, who were dressed in green combat uniforms, escaped towards Kajo-Keji in South Sudan.

This attack echoes a similar violent incident from July 2018 when gunmen targeted and killed alleged rebel Sekwati Nelson Loyita in the Palorinya settlement. The area’s porous borders with South Sudan continue to be a concern, allowing disguised attackers to infiltrate and perpetrate violence.
