Police in Kanungu have arrested a 25-year-old Elias Niwamanya in connection to the murder of Sonia Akankunda, all residents of Katunga parish in Rugeyo Sub County in Kanungu district, Southwestern Uganda.
According to the Katunga parish Chairperson Mr Jubilee Rwamatungo who reported to police, the suspect today morning at around 09:00 AM allegedly found the deceased at her residence and started assaulting her with a stick for unknown reasons until she met her death.
Rwamatungo said that after the incident, he mobilized locals to arrest the suspect and hand him over to Nyakabungo police post.
Kigezi Regional Police Spokesperson ASP Elly Maate confirmed the incident and said that the suspect was picked from Nyakabungo police post and is currently detained at Kambuga police station pending further investigations into the matter.
He added that the postmortem on the body of the deceased was done and handed over to the relatives for a decent burial as police tries to ascertain the likely cause of murder.
