Deadly Cholera Outbreak Strikes Kayunga and Namayingo – Health Ministry Confirms

Wednesday, July 26, 2023

The Ministry of Health is currently providing assistance to the districts of Kayunga and Namayingo in responding to cholera cases.

This decision came after the confirmation of positive cholera test results from three samples collected in each of the districts.

On July 15, 2023, the Namayingo District Health Office received an alert regarding a suspected cholera case. The patient, a 2-year and 9-month-old individual residing in Secho Village, Sigulu Subcounty, Bumalenge Parish, was admitted to Bugana HC III. The patient exhibited symptoms of profuse watery diarrhea, vomiting, and stomachache.

Two days later, on July 17, 2023, two more suspected cholera cases emerged. A 36-year-old female, who had traveled to Dumbe Market in Kenya five days before, and a 4-year-old child from the same household as the initial case, were admitted with similar signs and symptoms, including profuse watery diarrhea, vomiting, and stomachache.

In response to the situation, a total of four samples were collected and sent to the Central Public Health Laboratories (CPHL) for testing. Ten patients, out of the four tested, were admitted and subsequently discharged.

On July 24, 2023, CPHL confirmed the isolation of Vibrio cholera 01 ogawa in three out of the four collected samples, and the District Health Officers (DHOs) were informed.

Ainebyoona, speaking on behalf of the Ministry of Health, stated that they are currently supporting the districts of Kayunga and Namayingo in containing and responding to the spread of cholera, following the confirmation of some cases.

He emphasized that health officers are actively sensitizing the public to prevent further spread of the infection. This involves promoting the consumption of water from clean sources, encouraging hand washing, boiling drinking water, and ensuring thorough cooking of food.

Cholera is an acute diarrheal illness caused by Vibrio cholerae bacteria infection. It can be contracted through contaminated food or water. While some cases may be mild or asymptomatic, others can be severe and life-threatening.
