MBARARA, (Examiner) – Ruth Birungi, a self-proclaimed prophetess and wife of the Director of Mbarara University Teaching Hospital, is at the center of a controversy. She has continued to deny her husband access to medical treatment. Information from one of the closest doctors and friends revealed that she is instead opting for spiritual healing at Pastor Kayanja’s church. The director’s life is now in danger, and his family and friends are puzzled and questioning the woman’s motive.

The charismatic director had undergone a successful brain operation courtesy of government support but was subsequently taken to Pastor Kayanja’s church by his wife, where his treatment plan was allegedly altered for their selfish motive, one of close friends to the woman revealed. Recently, one of the relatives condemned Pastor Birungi for denying her husband access to medical treatment, claiming his sickness is due to witchcraft yet when she falls sick she takes medicine. This, allegedly prompted the most feared woman due to her arrogance to attack the relatives and ordered them never to step at her matrimonial home.

“Her motive is to take possession of property… Let her allow our brother to access medical treatment,” a relative lamented, shedding tears. “They are waded, but let her not kill him.” A family friend added, “Prayers can work alongside medical treatment… The miracle center-based pastor is silently milking the family. Instead of showing them the right way, he continues to use such people to give false testimonies in his church.”

Locals claim Birungi has sold some of the director’s properties and taken control of his assets. A concerned relative warned, “Can you imagine she was asking us what we would lose if he dies?… She will kill him, and we’ll regret it later. She has taken advantage of his sickness to control all his properties.” One of the doctors revealed that the government through the Health Ministry has committed to helping the director, but the family needs to cooperate. A friend said, “We’re willing to help because we grew up with the doctor… He’s a transparent leader. We want him to come back and continue serving the community.”

The family appeals to the Health Ministry and State House to intervene, saying, “Use all possible means to remove the senior hospital director from the wrong hands… Return him for treatment before it’s too late. We don’t want to lose him.” Earlier media reports have indicated that the wife of an accomplished hospital director has been forcing him to make irrational decisions, adding that no one in the family can reign over her because she portrays herself as untouchable and the most intelligent person. At one time, the ailing director begged her to treat his people with courtesy only to blast him in front of friends, adding that they don’t need anyone. The director reportedly told friends to take matters easy and calmed down the situation.

It is said that the same woman was accused of gross misconduct at one of the sub-counties where she is serving as a town clerk, and employees complained to authorities but instead of showing qualities of good leadership she abused them. For now, one of the relatives who used to stay with them told us that she is fond of bringing a group of pastors whom she pays to make false prophecy. These now want the humble doctor to be brought under the care of relatives and bar pastors misleading the woman to access the senior doctor till his full recovery and also reinitiate the accused woman on the mental treatment. However, some relatives and doctors say this might be a miracle as the woman has vowed not to allow anyone to take her husband for treatment without her permission.
