Govt Seeks Foreign Support in Cancer Fight

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has urged all foreign High Commissions accredited to Uganda to take part in the upcoming Rotary Cancer Run, aimed at supporting cancer elimination in the country. The 12th edition of the Rotary Cancer Run is scheduled to be held on the 27th of August 2023, both at Kololo ceremonial grounds and in major towns across Uganda and globally.

Under the theme “Run for Hope,” this year’s Cancer Run aims to raise UGX 2 billion for the construction of bunkers and related facilities at Nsambya Hospital. According to Minister of State for Foreign Affairs in-charge of Regional Affairs, John Mulimba, approximately UGX 13.8 billion is needed for the construction of the bunkers and the installation of a cancer machine at Nsambya Hospital. He emphasizes the importance of everyone’s contribution to saving lives and highlights the government’s significant role in combating cancer in the country, with Mulago cancer institute housing a state-of-the-art Cancer facility.

Mulimba also calls on Ugandans to prioritize early testing for cancer. Allen Ayebare, the Chief Manager of Corporate Affairs and Communication at Centenary Bank, the main sponsors of the 2023 cancer run, welcomes the government’s initiative to rally accredited commissions to participate in the event. Centenary Bank has already pledged UGX 300 million for this cause and reaffirms its commitment to saving lives, not only for its customers but for all of Uganda.
