Over 700 Red Eyes Disease Cases Confirmed in Schools, Prisons

The Ministry of Health has officially confirmed a total of 790 cases of Conjunctivitis, commonly known as red eyes disease, across schools and prison facilities in Kampala and its environs.

At a press briefing held at the ministry’s headquarters in Kampala, Dr. Daniel Kyabayinze, the Director of Public Health, announced that out of the total cases, 711 individuals have successfully recovered, marking a commendable recovery rate of 90%.

Dr. Kyabayinze further revealed that the outbreak has been detected in various schools within Kampala, as well as in eight prison facilities, primarily in the Nakawa and Rubaga divisions of Kampala district. The affected prisons include Luzira Upper Prison, Murchison Bay Prison, Kassanda Prison, Kaweeri Prison, and Lira Main Prison, among others.

Highlighting some common symptoms of Conjunctivitis, Dr. Kyabayinze mentioned itching, white discharge, photophobia, and aversion to sunlight. He urged the public to steer clear of crowded areas to minimize the risk of infection.

Dr. Diana Atwine, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Health, disclosed that Dr. Kyabayinze has been assigned to conduct further investigations into the disease. She also appealed to schools to promote good hygiene practices among students, emphasizing the importance of handwashing as the primary preventive measure.
