Kampala, Uganda | THE BLACK EXAMINER | Stanbic Bank, in partnership with the Corporate Society for Safe Motherhood, has donated maternal health equipment, including Mama kits and a modern delivery bed, to Luzira Prison Health Center IV. This initiative is part of the bank’s customer appreciation month called “L.O.V.E October,” where they show gratitude to customers and engage in corporate social investment.

Dr. Kim Kamarebe, a board member of Stanbic Bank, emphasized the bank’s commitment to support the Ministry of Health’s goal of reducing Uganda’s maternal mortality ratio to below 70 per 100,000 live births by 2030, as outlined in the UN Sustainable Development Goals. Uganda’s current maternal mortality ratio is just below 200 per 100,000 live births, and efforts to reduce this ratio are underway.

The handover ceremony took place at Luzira Maximum Prison in Kampala, where the Health Center In-charge, Dr. Nicholas Kisa, praised the bank for its timely support. He highlighted that the health center provides free medical services not only to inmates but also to the wider community, particularly those who are financially disadvantaged.

Stanbic Bank’s initiative, launched in May last year, aims to raise UGX5.9 billion for safe motherhood in collaboration with the Ministry of Health and private sector entities. The first phase of support will target facilities in high-need areas, addressing key infrastructure and equipment gaps.

Diana Ondoga, the Head of Corporate Social Initiatives at Stanbic Bank, reiterated the bank’s commitment to driving Uganda’s economic growth and making a positive difference in society through these efforts and donations.

The Luzira complex includes the Women’s Prison, Murchison Bay Prison, Luzira Upper Prison, and the Kampala Remand Prison. The health center offers a range of services, including general care, antenatal care, maternity services, immunization, and family planning, benefiting both inmates and the surrounding community.
