10 Perish in Kibimba Road Crash

  • Ten people were killed in a tragic road crash at Kibimba along the Iganga-Tororo road. The crash involved six vehicles, including trailers and taxis, with one tanker loaded with molasses traveling in the opposite direction.

Ten people have been killed in a road crash that occurred last evening at Kibimba along Iganga- Tororo road. Superintendent of Police -SP Michael Kananura the traffic police spokesperson said the crash that claimed lives of 10 involved six vehicles.

SP Kananura has identified the vehicles involved in the road crash as Benz trailer KBJ 156C/ZD 2621, Benz KDY 526G/ZD4391, Toyota Land Cruiser KDH 407T, Toyota Hiace UAV 597N, Toyota Hiace UAW 963M, KAE 254C/ZA 5971.

“The crash occurred yesterday at 7:50 pm at Kibimba after the bridge along Iganga- Tororo highway in Bugiri district. According to the initial report, the motor vehicles were moving the same direction towards Tororo excpet one vehicle KAE 254C/ZA 5971 tanker loaded with molase which was from the opposite direction heading to Iganga,” SP Kananura said.

Police said motor vehicle UAW 963M Toyota Hiace over took a queue of vehicles but he realized the oncoming motor vehicle when he was still overtaking. The driver swerved to his left to give way not realizing the ongoing vehicle was a trailer tanker loaded with molase.

“The trailer had a pulling behind which the taxi hit and it was squeezed against another trailer KBJ 155C/ZD 2621 Benz thus making the trailer lose control. It overturned and then caught fire. Ten people including eight passengers in a taxi, its driver and the driver of the trailer tank died on spot,” SP Kananura said.

Police took the bodies to Bugiri hospital mortuary for postmortem. The wreckages of five motor vehicles has since been removed to allow proper flow of traffic. The tanker loaded with molase by press time was still being guarded at the scene.
