173 Drivers Arrested Over Drink-driving; 991 Motorcycles Impounded

Kampala, Uganda | THE BLACK EXAMINER | On Monday, the police reported that 173 drivers had been apprehended on Friday for driving under the influence of alcohol and were fined Shs200,000 each. Most of these individuals were caught in areas including Wandegeya, Old Kampala, CPS Kampala, Kiira Road, and Katwe division.

Traffic police spokesperson, SP Michael Kananura, stated that these drivers were held in detention until the following day, where they were fingerprinted and penalized Shs200,000 each. Furthermore, during the week of September 10 to 16, 2023, CCTV cameras recorded 99 drivers exceeding the speed limit on the Kampala-Entebbe Expressway, all of whom were subsequently fined Shs200,000 each.

In addition to these fines, a total of 991 motorcycles were seized for various infractions, including 502 riders without valid driving licenses, 334 without proper crash helmets, 298 lacking reflectors, and 127 for other violations.

SP Kananura emphasized that the Fika Salama Extra Awareness team continues its efforts to engage with communities, using various communication channels such as media outlets, social media platforms, and in-person interactions to disseminate road safety messages nationwide.
