260 Buildings on Uganda Railway Line in Kasese To Face Demolition

Wednesday, August 23, 2023

Kasese District | The Black Examiner – 260 commercial and residential buildings located along the Uganda Railway line in Kasese Municipality are at risk of being demolished due to encroachment concerns.

A recent press statement issued by the Uganda Railway Corporation, which was obtained by this publication, emphatically states that the corporation has not sold any portion of its railway line or land reserves. Settlement or utilization of this land by individuals or institutions is deemed illegal according to the corporation’s statement.

The corporation has appealed for the voluntary evacuation of the encroached areas, cautioning that legal measures will be taken if compliance is not met voluntarily.

In a phone interview, Mr. Richard Nangalama, the Manager of the Uganda Railway Corporation, expressed that despite repeated calls for the affected parties in Kasese Municipality to vacate the railway land, their responses have not been taken seriously. Stricter actions are on the horizon, except for those with valid land titles, who will be offered compensation.

Although the impacted local developers, including some local leaders, have refrained from providing extensive comments to the press, attributing the situation to their previous land transactions, there are divergent opinions among them.

Mr. Adonious Kinyambila, who claims to be one of the potential victims of the impending demolitions, has questioned the accuracy of the corporation’s survey findings. He believes that the survey results may have mistakenly implicated him.

While some of the affected individuals hold onto the belief that the corporation will not expedite the demolition process, unverified sources have relayed to this publication that a Turkish contractor has already been awarded a contract. This contract allegedly involves addressing the Malaba – Tororo-Kampala and the Kampala-Kasese railway lines in tandem.
