73-Year Old Woman Killed in Cold Blood in Rukungiri

The Police in Rukungiri district are investigating circumstances surrounding the death of a 73 year old woman whose body was discovered in the kitchen lying dead.

According to the Kigezi Region Police spokesperson ASP Elly Maate, the deceased was identified as Kogyire Lydia a resident of Bugarama cell, Bugangari parish, Bugangari Sub County in Rukungiri District.

According to the Police mouthpiece, the matter was reported to Police by Piason Atwongirwe, a teacher at Nyanganjara Primary School, a resident of the same area, who alleges that the deceased was discovered by Turyakira Jackeline who found her body lying in the Kitchen that was temporarily closed with an unlocked padlock.

It is alleged that on Sunday morning Kongyire Lydia, now the deceased was seen by her son Akankwasa Keleb doing domestic work at her home and at around 5:30 PM, Turyakira Jackeline while coming from Bugangari church headed to her home found Akankwasa Kereb and Ainembabazi Elias (Grandsons to the deceased) at Akankwasa’s home.

She was told by Ainembabazi Elias that he had come to visit her grandmother and she (Jacklin) proceeded to her home a few meters to Kogyire’s home to change clothes before checking on the neighbor (now the deceased) to inform her the message from the church as usual.

Upon reaching Jacklin’s, she found the main house open ,called but no response and went ahead to cross-check in the kitchen that she found it temporarily closed. Upon opening the door, she saw the leg of the deceased lying dead from which she went back immediately, notified the grandsons and continued to inform others.

Maate said the Police officers were able to visit the Crime scene and the deceased’s body was conveyed to Rwakabengo health center III mortuary pending postmortem examination as well as arresting Akankwasa Keleb the deceased’s grandson to assist in investigations.

A case of Murder was registered at Bugangari Police station on the file Number SD REF:  06/10/09/2023 as more Inquiries are at hand waiting to revisit the crime scene for proper documentation and evidence gathering.

The murder incident came just hours after another woman was killed in Buhunga Sub County of Rukungiri District on Friday on allegations of witchcraft.
