8 People Killed in Overloaded Truck Accident in Kakumiro

Kakumiro District | The Black Examiner – On Tuesday evening, at around 9 p.m., tragedy struck Kyabasegu village in Kisengwe sub-county as a devastating accident unfolded. The incident involved an overloaded fuso truck registration number UBE 854D, carrying more than 70 market vendors, which lost control while navigating a perilous bend. Regrettably, the vehicle careened off the road, overturning multiple times and resulting in the immediate loss of eight lives. Some of the accident victims hail from Kyenjojo, Mubende, and Kakumiro districts.

Some survivors who shared their accounts with The Black Examiner revealed that the driver was exceeding the speed limit by the accident occurred. Some of them attempted to jump from the truck in a desperate bid to save their lives, while the driver fled the scene immediately after the accident.

Joseph Niwaha, an eyewitness, said, “I heard cries for help and rushed to the scene, finding survivors in dire need of assistance.” Johnson Tulinawe, another witness, stated, “The bodies of the deceased individuals were trapped beneath the vehicle when the first rescue team arrived.”

Julius Hakiza, the Albertine region police spokesperson, stated that the identities of the deceased and injured individuals are yet to be confirmed. He noted that the bodies of the deceased have been transported to Kakumiro Health Center IV mortuary, awaiting postmortem examinations, while the injured have also been taken to the same health facility.

Kakumiro District Chairman Joseph Sentayi Ssenkusu has issued a stern warning to drivers, urging them to refrain from overloading and operating vehicles in unsafe mechanical conditions.
