Summary:

  • Police are reviewing CCTV footage to determine if Pastor Aloysius Bugingo was trailed before surviving an assassination attempt, with investigations ongoing into the shooting in Kampala, Uganda, where Bugingo’s bodyguard was killed.

Police are currently in the process of scrutinizing footage from various CCTV cameras as part of the ongoing inquiry into the attempted assassination of Pastor Aloysius Bugingo from the House of Prayer Ministries.

According to Luke Owoyesigyire, the deputy police spokesperson for Kampala Metropolitan, the analysis of CCTV footage aims to determine whether Bugingo was being followed by his assailants or if they ambushed him.

“We are currently examining CCTV footage starting from Salt TV headquarters in Lungujja, retracing the route he took, to establish whether he was being trailed or if there were other circumstances,” stated Owoyesigyire.

Bugingo, a prominent pastor, narrowly escaped an assassination attempt on Tuesday night when unidentified attackers on a motorcycle opened fire on his vehicle around 9 pm at Bawalakata Junction along National Housing Road, in Namungoona zone 2 in Lubaga division. Tragically, Bugingo’s bodyguard, Corporal Richard Muhumuza of the Special Forces Command (SFC), lost his life in the incident.

The police are investigating the case, and Maj Jimmy Omara, the SFC spokesperson, confirmed that the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) has initiated an inquiry into the shooting.

In response to the contamination of the crime scene by locals, the police announced that a forensic examination is being conducted on Bugingo’s vehicle by experts from the police’s forensics directorate at Naguru. The examination aims to uncover any evidence that could lead to the identification of the shooters.

“The forensic directorate is currently collecting evidence from the vehicle, which is considered another crime scene. Projectiles have already been retrieved from the car to determine the number of bullet holes. The Old Kampala police are awaiting the forensic report to guide the next steps of the investigation,” explained Owoyesigyire.

He added that preliminary findings, based on spent cartridges collected from the scene, suggest that a pistol was likely used in the shooting. However, details such as the number of bullets fired and the specific type of pistol can only be confirmed after the forensic report is completed.
