Court Martial Sends Two Soldiers to Life and 30 Years in Prison

Agago District | The Black Examiner – The 5 Division Court Martial, convening in Agago District, has handed down severe sentences to two soldiers. Private Mukanja Micheal, attached to the 79 Battalion, has been sentenced to life imprisonment for murder, while Private Okello George of the 81 Battalion will serve 30 years for attempted murder.

The Court Martial, presided over by Colonel Ismail Ssendagire, heard that on the fateful day of May 31, 2023, at approximately 1700hrs, Private Mukanja was present at Kokil trading centre within the Paimol Sub-County playground. Tragically, he fatally shot Omol Justine following a heated disagreement sparked by a football match.

Furthermore, the court ruled on the case of Private Okello George, also from the 81 Battalion, who has been sentenced to 30 years for his involvement in an attempted murder. It was revealed that, on the afternoon of August 27, 2023, in Lira Kato Sub-County, Agago District, the convict discharged his weapon, causing injuries to Odwel John during an altercation. The injured party is presently receiving medical care at Lacor Hospital.

During the same court session, Private Ssekaja Ivan received a 14-month sentence for his failure to protect war material.

Colonel Ssendagire, the Chairman of the Court Martial, emphasized the commitment of the Uganda People’s Defence Force (UPDF) to upholding its core principles and values. He unequivocally stated that the UPDF will not tolerate any actions by its personnel that threaten the very population they are entrusted to safeguard.

This ruling marks a significant step in ensuring accountability within the military and reinforcing the principle that the armed forces exist to protect and serve the people.
